Match Policy and Captaincy Roles

Context

Conway Tennis Club participates in inter-club league matches organised by Middlesex Tennis. The Club runs teams and offers match-play opportunities to members at all competitive levels. Currently, the Club has five men’s, five women’s, two Over-40s, one Over-55 and three Mixed teams. The aim is to offer members the opportunity to experience and enjoy competitive tennis and build their skills, both as individuals and team members.

This statement sets out the Club’s match policy, including captaincy roles and responsibilities. It is reviewed regularly and up-dated as necessary to ensure it remains clear and effective.

Player Eligibility

All Club members are invited to express interest in playing league matches for teams that match their levels of experience and competence. League match players must be paid-up members of Conway LTC and have an LTA Advantage number (formally British Tennis Membership number). Membership of LTA Advantage is free to Club members and can be obtained through the LTA website. Members may not play in the same league for more than one tennis club.

Club Captains

Each year, the Club appoints a Women’s Club Captain and a Men’s Club Captain to support league teams and take oversight of the balance of tennis activities across the Club. This includes league matches, coaching, Club tournaments, social and individual tennis. Club Captains guide individual Team Captains on squad composition, team selection, inter-team liaison, match arrangements and alignment with Club ethos and policies. They also provide support and, if necessary, decisions in the event of uncertainty or disagreement between Team Captains regarding any of these matters. At the Club’s Annual General Meeting, Club Captains present a report covering the year’s tennis activities.

Team Captains

Men’s and Women’s Team Captains are appointed by the relevant Club Captain. Captains for all other teams are appointed by both Club Captains in consultation.

Before a match season begins, each Team Captain, in consultation with other relevant Team Captains and Club Captain(s), specifies a squad, taking account of individual skills, commitment, overall balance and the number of players required for matches. Club Captains work with Team Captains to ensure suitable player resources at all levels. Team captains are the first point of contact for squad members.

Team captains may arrange try-out sessions for potential squad members before a season begins. In the event of any squad member subsequently being unable to play due to injury or other reason, the affected Team Captain may choose replacements, consulting with other Captains as appropriate.

Squad Members and Team Players

Squad members are expected to commit to playing several matches each season and to accept their Team Captain’s decisions. They are asked to give as much notice as possible if injury or other issue affects their availability and to welcome and respect visiting teams.

Squad members and team players may take relevant queries or concerns to their Team Captains. If an issue cannot be resolved in this way, advice should be sought from the relevant Club Captain(s).
